john darnielle of the mountain goats authors one of my favorite blogs on the whole wide sea of superinformation. it seems that, besides being the best known artist committed to boom box, he is also a damn fine writer, and i will take his recommendation of most anything without a moment's critical hesitation. the blog is titled last plane to jakarta.'

one of those you can't afford to miss

i was unable to unearth a decent live video of these guys, but regardless, they deserve a mention anyway. if black metal is your thing, there is no way you're not gonna dig chaos moon. these two guys from nashville have been releasing stuff since 2004 (enlisting a vocalist and bass player for live performances), playing melodic-yet-bleak black metal, implementing ambient (at times bordering on doom) elements complemented by howling vocals and a truly relentless jack blackburn on drums. they've only released two full-lengths (both in 2007), an ep and a split with frostmoon eclipse and benighted in sodom so far, but if there is a grain of reason in this world, they will get their due.
